Recommended Boondocking Sites
Arizona is ranked #1 when it comes to boondocking with roughly 32.5 million combined acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the National Forest Service. With so many wonderful sites to choose from it is hard to stand out above the rest however below you will find a few sites that come highly recommended. These sites were submitted by others and have not been verified personally, PLEASE do your own research!
Indian Bread Rocks (Bowie) – Operated by Bureau of Land Management
GPS: 32.2387, -109.5
Great views of the desert and night sky. Quiet and off the beaten path but still close to several attractions such as Tombstone and Bisbee. Stayed an extra day to go hiking! Good cell signal. Offers dispersed camping, vault toilet, trash and a picnic area.
Forest Road 525 (Outside Sedona) – Operated by USDA Forest Service
GPS: 34.8613, -111.9442
Great area to boondock when exploring the red rock area! The first five miles of FR525 and all of FR 525 are open for camping. For a quick overnighter find a pull off area to towards the beginning of the road. If you plan on staying for a while (up to 14 days) then drive in further for better the views. Warning the road is dirt and washboard but doable. Cell phone coverage is spotty, some areas are great others not. This is dispersed camping with no amenities.
Forest Road 611 (North Rim) – Operated by USDA Forest Service
GPS: 36.394, -112.1155
Alpine forest and a view of the Grand Canyon! Located in Koibab National Forest just outside of north rim Grand Canyon Park entrance FR-611 offers dispersed camping with no amenities. Very peaceful area with lots of areas to hike. Keep going until you reach the rim for the best views.
